Dr. Williams from Oakland CA is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students access to literature of successful women writers. The aim of this project is to build a library of diverse women writers. Our first text will honor the late Toni Morrison.

Our school community is a true representation of Oakland, California's racial and socioeconomic diversity. Our learners are eager, creative, and excited to expand their access to literary texts that will help shape their developing minds. With the extreme, financial hardships that our district has faced, it has greatly impacted resources that are made available to students. With the support of this project, our learners will have access to a Young Women's library that will consist of canons and contemporary works written by women of color.
The reality is that many of my students do not have access to books at home and rely on our classroom library to check out high-quality books.
With our new books, we will officially launch our Young Women's Library, which will allow us to introduce our learners to amazing women authors. We look forward to incorporating these texts into the lives of our learners.
These books will support the creation of our classroom library that celebrates women writers throughout the world. The classroom library is an effort to highlight diverse, women authors as we work towards an annual school-wide event that celebrates International Day of the Girl. The books will build upon our middle school, friendship project with girls that live and attend schools in townships located in Johannesburg, South Africa. Our first book will introduce learners to the amazing Toni Morrison and her gifts of literature that she has shared throughout the world. The books listed in this project will also support the Project-Based Learning assignment "If you really knew me", which will focus on disrupting stereotypes of girls, particularly those from marginalized populations.
With these new books, my students will be able to read works from authors that look like them.
The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. We look forward to welcoming these amazing books to help build our Young Women's Library!
