My Students
Though this is my first year teaching, I'm fortunate in that I already know the students I'll have come this fall! I will be teaching at AES, the same school and community in which I was raised and so I know many (if not all) of my students and their families.
As a rural school in Maine, we often have trouble accessing the "extras".
Community is central to my learners and their education, but they are also eager to discover the world around them. They are motivated individuals who deserve the "extras" that will provide them with the tools and experiences which are integral to their learning.
My Project
It goes without saying that you can't have an ELA classroom without writing. I've found that while writing is often central to instruction, students aren't always provided with the time or space to write freely.
At the heart of my teaching philosophy lies the reminder that we are not just helping students be successful in the classroom, but that we are working to create lifelong learners.
The practices that we introduce to them are among those they take into their lives later down the road. With these journals, I hope to instill a daily practice of reflection and free writing.
These journals and other supplies will be used as a morning warm up activity each day. When students arrive, rather than having a different bell ringer each day, students will be provided with 15 minutes of free writing time. As this will be a new practice at the beginning of the year I'll provide guidance until they're able to transition to a more independent practice.
