Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As I have in most years, I set a goal to read around 10 class sets of books outside of the school curriculum, and to date we have read six! However, this year we are trying something new - we are moving beyond just one class and we will be reading class novels across the entire fifth grade!

We are starting with a little unit on human rights violations, dealing with the Holocaust, Japanese internment camps, and the treatment of Native Americans in our country.

We will need books that can really help our students connect to these topics, which is why I am asking for help!

My Project

While most of my projects have just dealt with my class, this year, the fifth grade team is trying to gather books for the entire grade! We are planning on creating a unit to teach students about human rights and need books to help students grasp this heavy concept.

We will be learning about many different human rights violations, touching on the Holocaust, internment camps, and reservations, and we will even be meeting with one of the authors of these books!

We will be virtually meeting with Marion Blumenthal Lazan who is the author of Four Perfect Pebbles. She will be sharing her story with us and hopefully this can be profoundly impactful for all of the fifth grade students!
