My Students

My students are dreamers.

Many of them come from families new to our country, but their motivation to scratch out a life from the asphalt of the city makes them as American, in spirit, as anyone whose ancestors came over on the Mayflower. These kids look at obstacles and see opportunities and teaching them as been pure joy. Our school is experiencing a transition from being majority Caucasian to being majority Hispanic. Rather than resist this change the school leadership has embraced it and I want to arm my students with the tools they need to be beacons of intellect for the rest of our community to see.

My Project

Having these dictionaries will allow my students the ability to independently discover the meaning of the English language. Many of them have become dependent on technology to uncover information. While technology is important, they often aren't allowed access to it in a testing environment and on classroom assessment. Therefore, it is important that they learn to use reference materials to discover information. We will use the dictionaries for weekly vocabulary, close reading of novels and passages, and throughout the writing process.

I am committed to my students, but as I have a family to support I am not always able to contribute financially to their success.

Having these dictionaries will enable my students to no longer be held back by a lack of access to resources. It will help them reach their potential.
