My class is in need of a "paper" reference center. This is essential for building the vocabulary skills of my students. With a class set of dictionaries and thesauri, I can play word hunt games while learning about prefixes and suffixes. I can also help students expand their vocabulary through the use of a thesaurus. This is one of the best tools possible for getting students to end the use of 'boring" words, a key component of my writing and speaking program in sixth grade. Students are motivated by their OWN work and success. With a "word reference center" in the classroom, there will be much less need for the students to rely on the teacher for synonyms, antonyms, spelling, and definitions. Not only will the students be more self sufficient, they will have more time for the important part of teacher-student writing conferences: analyzing the actual content of their writing. Your help would be greatly appreciated and would do more for students' writing skills than you can imagine.
