My students need historical costumes of important leaders of the American Revolution such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and colonists to reenact scenes leading up to the American Revolution.
My students are so excited to learn each and every day. I welcome them each morning by saying, "Good Morning my amazing class," and they respond with "Good Morning my amazing teacher." I then ask, "How are you feeling today?" and they shout, "We are feeling great and are ready to learn." I am a passionate elementary educator who wants to create an engaging classroom environment by bringing American History to life with costumes and reenactments. I am responsible for 50 students in 4th grade. The Elementary school where I teach is a large school with a total enrollment of 700 hundred students. The student body consists of students from low income to medium income families. It also includes students from many diverse ethnic groups as well as students identified with special needs.
My students walk into my classroom with welcoming smiles, energy, and motivation to learn.
However, our history lessons start to become monotonous with teacher storytelling, students taking notes, and reading. I want my students to feel the excitement of history by dressing up as the important figures we discuss and reenacting scenes in history.
My Project
My 4th grade students spend a little over a month studying the American Revolution to explore the formation of the United States in America from the eve of the American Revolution through the creation of the new government. While they enjoy learning about this time in history, the lessons become monotonous. Having historical costumes they can wear will make our history lessons come alive! These costumes will have many impacts on their learning. Students will be able to dress in these costumes and take on the role of an important figure in the American Revolution, and they will be able to immediately apply the content in a real world context. Also, this new type of learning will enable students to remember the information better and see things from a new perspective. This opportunity will allow students to practice their speaking skills and creativity will be sparked. I can already forsee the motivation and engagement these costumes will bring to my classroom and the excitement on my student's faces.
