This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Welcome to our school where we build "Champions for Life." These words are the first thing our students hear over the announcement system every day! Immediately after these words sound and the announcements conclude, we get to business in the band room.
Music should be an option for all, however, the expenses of having and maintaining a musical instrument are too much for the majority of the music students within our district.
This is a problem we face everyday here. The program here serves almost 150 students from grades 9-12. Of the students, about 75% are using school-owned instruments that are in need of moderate repair (which we simply do not have the budget for). These are wonderful, hardworking kids who come from struggling families. Without school funded support in the arts, these students will continue to step away from performance-based classes (such as band) due to financial reasons.
My Project
The woodwind sections of both the LMS and LHS bands are growing at a tremendous rate which has increased my need for a consistent stream of supplies. Reeds are the heart of a woodwind instrument and currently we are down to a few boxes to get us through our remaining three performances / 2 months of school. I am asking for 120 Clarinet Reeds, 50 Alto Sax Reeds and other assorted saxophone Reeds.
Students love coming to school because of our music program, and without supplies to play this class is not enjoyable.
Funding for the arts in our district has been cut down by about 33% this year making it extremely difficult to continue to produce high level results. Your donations are literally helping to keep a successful music program alive!
