Mr. Richardson from Lamar SC is requesting musical instruments through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need reeds for their clarinets and saxophones. Our community has a hard time supplying our students with reeds due to the recurring expense.

I am a Band and Chorus director at SMS (grades 6-8) in a small, rural town where the main economic industry is agriculture. We are a Title I school with less than 290 students and each of them receive free breakfast and lunch. Our band program is over 15% of our student body. Our community loves our music programs but struggles to support the band when equipment fails. Both of our bands have woodwind players that have the potential to create a future for themselves in music.
We would like to help our students have the greatest chance for future success by providing quality reeds to our woodwind students.
This would not only help our community with the financial burden but allow more students to participate without the worry of recurring expenses. Our bands perform for our community several times throughout the year. This allows our students to play a key role in affecting the lives of our community.
Our program teaches students several key concepts that will serve them in life: teamwork, accountability, communication, the drive to succeed, and more! Our students cannot successfully learn or provide for our community without the proper equipment!
I plan on using these reeds to supply our students with the proper equipment without the stress of recurring expenses. We currently rely on our students' parents to supply everything the student needs for their instrument. This causes many of our students to be unprepared or even drop out of band class due to cost.
With a small school budget, it is impossible for us to give these students the opportunity to succeed in music if they are unable to afford the equipment they need to play their instruments.
In the past, if a student did not have his or her reed or the reed was unplayable the student had to wait days or even weeks before his or her parent was paid and able to get them reeds. These reeds will supply our bands for a year or more!
Your donation will help improve our students' ability to create music, support the community, and enjoy their time in the band!
