Do you remember what it was like to explore nature as a child? My students have the opportunity to integrate math, science, natural resource conservation and the arts through a series of field trips and classroom activities.
My students attend a charter school in California.
The mission of our school is to integrate high academic standards with the arts and service learning. We try to take our learning outside of the classroom as much as possible. Our students learn that each subject area should not be thought of in isolation. The skills and knowledge that they build in science and math can also be used in art. Their ability to create can increase their ability to express themselves in math and science. Perhaps most importantly they are learning that they can make a difference in the world through natural resource conservation and service learning.
My Project
Our Kindergarten classes have an opportunity to visit a local redwood forest three times throughout the year. In class they will study trees and forest habitats, create art inspired by the trips and share their experience with our community. Our students will also learn about the importance of reducing, reusing, recycling and rotting in order to conserve natural resources. The combination of the field trips and the resources your donation will provide will help to ensure that our students are understanding the importance of conservation.
The books and hands on materials your donation will provide will deepen the connections between our field visits and math and science standards for Kindergarten.
Magnifying glasses will enable students to take a closer look at the natural wonder surrounding us both in the forest and at our own school site.
