Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have Autism and intellectual disabilities and the majority of them are also living in poverty. They struggle with communication, academics, social skills, transitions and changes in their daily lives. They may face all these challenges and yet they are eager to learn, want to make friends and look forward to coming to school every day!
They face so many challenges in the world on a daily basis between their disability and economic challenges, that their school environment needs to be predictable, supportive, positive and allow them to shine in every way possible!
My Project
My students need the following craft supplies for our fun craft rotations: multi-colored cardstock, pencil grip tempera paint, jumbo craft sticks, glitter shakers, magic model clay, easy clean craft trays, and easy squeeze adapted scissors.
Our students are grouped into small groups of 4-7 and come to a craft rotation one day a week to break up their day and reduce behaviors.
It helps them to work on following directions, fine motor skills and creativity. Some of these materials are adapted so it allows all of our students to participate in the craft project.
At the end of the year we showcase the students' art work in an art show. The students are always so excited and proud of their projects!
