Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I will always remember wearing my dad's old shirt for art time. Today more and more time is being used for test prep time. Assessment is great but often overlooks the diversity found in learners. Having the means to do this in the classroom provides my students with new (old) ways to shine.
My children come from primarily migrant backgrounds.
A majority of the parents speak little or no English. They are in a first grade public school in a rural community located in Florida. Most would be considered low income to impoverished. They are an enthusiastic bunch who come with little background knowledge about everyday things many of us take for granted. They are eager to learn and share but often lack the facility to do this through language.
My Project
I have had those second language learners sit in my classroom not getting"it" because they simply did not know enough of the language. But , oh the change when you give them a blank piece of paper and allow them to creatively express what they are feeling or what they do understand. The difference can be quite amazing and humbling. So being able to allow them to express themselves in a nonverbal way gives me a greater opportunity to assess them more accurately. When they are enjoying themselves in an activity at the sand table or painting they let down their guard a little to let me see what they are taking in and it allows them to see school in a different light- one that is not quite so unfamiliar and exclusive.
There have been many studies recently on the benefits of introducing playful elements into teaching.
By looking for ways to stretch them to think, explore, discover and express themselves in ways that are not so structured can only be beneficial. Learning can be fun and doesn't have to be always tied to an assessment or standard. Although, I have no doubt activities allowing children to freely explore will be rich in conversations which lead to a greater understanding of things that will be.
