Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in New Mexico in a small and rural community. As the school counselor, I serve our approximate 520 students whose grades range from pre-k to sixth grade. Most of the students and families I serve come from low-income households. In fact, our school is a Title I school, and 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. As in most cases, I see a lot of issues in my students and their families that are usually correlated with poverty such as single-parent households, drug-related issues, immigration issues, abuse, and family instability.
However, in response to these unique challenging circumstances, my students are strong, resilient, loving, fighting, and determined individuals who manage to try their best in everything they do.
As my school's counselor, my main priority is to equip my students with the social and emotional skills they need to face any hardship, along with providing educational resources they need so they can focus on learning.
My Project
This pandemic has increasingly become more challenging as a school counselor. Most resources available to teach Social Emotional Skills are designed for paper/pencil learning while meeting with students in person. However, during this pandemic and online learning those resources fall short to meet our student's current needs. In a district where support to school counselors are limited, I rely on researching or creating my own lessons, activities, videos, and resources to teach SEL Skills. As a fairly new counselor, this means constantly creating material for any needs our students may have. The IPAD PRO, compatible Magic Keyboard, and compatible Apple Pencil will facilitate the creation and editing of my lessons and videos I make for my students during this pandemic. I post social emotional interactive lessons each week, as well as videos to demonstrate those skills. I also meet with students weekly where I target specific needs. With the COVID 19 situation getting worse in my region, I look forward to these resources facilitating my group counseling, individual counseling, and lessons to help my students and families to the best of my ability.
