Our students live in rural upstate NY, on the border of MA and CT. They are diverse in terms of interests and experiences, but universally wonderful and curious. At over 60% low-income families, our population is shrinking while the poverty level is rising.
Our students love music!
Our Music program has been subject to staffing and program cuts over the last few years, due to shrinking population and financial challenges, but we’re bouncing back and looking to expand opportunities and experiences for our students!
My Project
Music is timeless. In our digital world, new tunes drop every moment, lost albums are found in the archives, and music from hundreds of years ago is being performed now! Music knows no boundaries, connecting people thousands of miles away and across hundreds of languages and cultures. Steadfast, yet ever changing, Music is fueled by the vast energy of the human creative spirit. Sadly, classrooms are often limited in the amount that they can change.
We’re redefining, reimagining and reinventing our Music space and the scope of our program.
We have had the great fortune to be able to acquire a multi-purpose Music Lab featuring digital pianos and electric guitars which will help us provide a rounded Music education that connects the past, present & future for our students in the digital age.
The challenge is that our Music room serves grades 4-12 and will house the Music Lab as well as our General Music classroom. We’ve had to eliminate our classroom tables which take up too much room. This second set of rolling desks will make our space more flexible. They can be moved easily when needed for a variety of tasks, be it writing, using an iPad or a cool synthesizer module. They are height adjustable, so students can use them sitting or standing. With stacking chairs and rolling stands the room can serve many scenarios and the students win! When not in use, they will be stored on the periphery of the room & will serve to protect instruments & equipment at our guitar stations from accidental damage from passersby.
We are extremely grateful to our district for providing our new equipment! Now, as we reinvent our program to serve our students in the 21st century, we will continue to reimagine and redefine our space, as well.
