My students come from a economically disadvantaged area but the parents are working hard and make sure their children are at school everyday. We have big population of students that either do not speak English at all or do not speak it at home and only speak at school.
Our students are excited about being at an International Baccalaureate Elementary school and love to make connections to the part they play in their community and the world.
The opportunities to listen to stories set in different parts of the world not only connects these students to the country they came from but allows them to see how even though their location is different they share the same experiences.
These students love to talk about the connections they have to the stories they hear. In addition to talking, they need a lot of opportunities to hear stories and rhymes for development of their language skills
My Project
Kindergarten should be fun. Listening to fun stories that rhyme and are playful. Even though I will read to the students every day they could benefit from even more time listening to stories and a great way to do this is through a listening center. I have books and audio versions but it would be great if the students took turns at a listening center where they could listen to a book while I worked with a different group.
Some students come to school with headphones but many don't.
To bring some equity into the classroom it would be good to have a class set of headphones for the students to use for their computer lessons. These research backed lessons not only focus on the phonics we go over in whole group instruction but it strengthens their phonological awareness and vocabulary leading them to be successful readers.
I love to read and want my students to be excited about reading and giving them an opportunity to hear as many books and words as possible.
