Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Mexican-American and Vietnamese-American students are the apple of my eye. However, they are struggling with the issues of their own cultural identity. They do not yet understand how to be proud of who they are and where they came from.

These magnificent students have not had a chance to examine their own cultural complexities. They have not had the access to excellent novels that show them the struggles and the celebrations of their own culture.

In a time in their lives when social pressures are so difficult to stand up to, these students need reading that will clarify for them their cultural heritage and where they have come from. These books will enrich their minds and fill their hearts with an increased sense of community and cultural awareness.

You can provide the means for these students to grasp their culture and stand up to social pressures that surround them more and more every day. As a donor to this project, you will place powerful literature written by Mexican-Americans and Vietnamese-Americans who have struggled with social challenges and who have overcome these challenges so that they might understand and celebrate their heritage. You can provide words that will grab my students' attention and make them think about who they are, where they came from, and where they want to go in their lives.
