Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In addition to teaching Kindergarten at my charter school, I am also the ecology coordinator for my K-8 site. In three short years we have gone from just having trash cans to having recycling bins in all classrooms and offices, recycle electronic waste and recycling batteries in a responsible manner. While I am extremely proud of my staff, student body and community involvement that has made this possible, I want to take it a step further.
Recycling is a good start in becoming aware of our carbon footprint. Reducing is the next step in making our students aware of what pro-active steps they can take in reducing their carbon footprint. While we do recycle our plastic bags , I want to instill into the students of cutting the plastic altogether and get into the habit of taking their OWN bag when they go shopping with their family. Less than 5% is recycled and the fumes generated from burning it to recycle it is counter productive.
This is an ambitious proposal. However, I would like each student at my school , kindergarten through 8th- to design their own canvas bag. By designing it themselves , they will have more buy-in to actually use the bag as opposed to me just giving them one.
If we truly want to create social agents of change , then we need to start at the earliest of ages to show that they can make a difference.
