As a learning community we have been making steady rapid progress, lifting ourselves from a near SURR status six years ago to being named one of New York's "100 Most Improved" schools last year. That being said, we still have great needs. We have near 100% poverty levels and serve a sizable immigrant population.
My students are industrious, creative and entrepreneurial. As an art teacher I try to encourage my students to apply their natural creativity to academic and real world situations. Since winning the city-wide Golden Apple Award for community beautification the students of PS46K are very ecologically minded. We are constantly generating creative "green" ideas.
Like any place where work is being done, a school produces plenty of waste paper. It all goes in the recycle container, however my students and I have often wished that we could put all that thrown out paper to better use! Most often the paper going into that blue garbage can has a perfectly useable back side. With a spiral binder we would be able to save the about-to-be-thrown-out paper into sketchbooks and notebooks.
We are requesting a spiral binding machine that I could operate with the students and the spiral bindings for the book bindings. To make the project most worthwhile we would make two books each, plus a few more for special projects. That means over one thousand books to be made during the course of the year.
Once the students got going on this project it would be self sustaining. PS46's "Green Machine" student body is developing strong leadership skills. Students could give those skills a work out sharing management of this projects. They could even sell the sketchbooks to raise money for future supplies.
Best of all the sketch/note books could be carried after school. They would help students keep their thinking going after school hours!
