Our Early Childhood center is funded through Title 1 and local school funds. The children that come to this school are from all different economic backgrounds. All children in our community are eligible to participate in our preschool program, regardless of family income or special needs. Our program, and entire school district, is facing many funding challenges. Teachers are looking for alternative funding sources to provide needed materials and supplies.
Our Early Childhood center has been teaching recycling for 14 years. In the beginning, we were just recycling cans. The children would bring in bags of cans that would be transported to a recycling center in a neighboring town. We have now expanded to include the entire school and community in our recycling project. Many banks and area businesses bring us their recycling. We now recycle paper, cardboard, and plastic as well as cans. The recycling center brings us a semi-trailer to fill and the preschool children, with the help of middle and high school students, sort the items into the appropriate container. This year our homecoming theme was "Recycle the Raiders", and all the floats had to be made out of recyclable materials. When the parade was over we filled 2 semi-trailers full! Our community is very supportive of our recycling efforts. We are looking for ways to expand our program and make it more efficient.
Our problem is we have no place to contain the materials until "Recycle Day". The elementary principal has given us a room to use. However we have no way to keep the room neat and tidy until we can transport the materials. We have chosen some large containers to keep the items in and will be able to move them easier across the campus to the semi-trailer.
We believe it is very important to teach recycling in order to help the environment. Hopefully the children will continue to use their knowledge of recycling and continue to conserve our resources.
