Students enrolled in Environmental Sciences at Whitehall Yearling High School are working hard to inform the public about the benefits of recycling and most importantly, provide recycling services to our school!
Students have been working hard every day on their Recycling projects, which they will present to the community during a Recycling Carnival at our school. Sandra and Odalis are making dresses out of recycled materials, Taylon and Rasheed are designing a three point shoot-out trivia game, and Kaba is writing a rap song to be performed live at the event. These are only a few examples of the exceptional creativity our students are bringing to life at WYHS!
We started this project with collecting data on trash and recycling outputs from each department, then analyzed that data to determine school needs. Through this PBL, students are creating products using real-world skills including teamwork, presenting in front of their peers and supervisors, time management, and generating and selecting original ideas.
In Their Own Words
My goal is to make an illustrated book for kids. The book is supposed to help kids learn more about recycling and what happens when we don't recycle. Also the book will help young kids learn a little bit more about landfills and how they affect the environment and ourselves. But there are lots of different projects happening in our class! Each different one helping people to learn.
We will make this project happen by combining recycling information with something that kids like to do or see. Whether it's a game, a book, a song, an piece of art, or an interactive presentation, I think involving fun things with work will always draw more kids to complete the task at hand.
This project is important to us because we're glad we're helping people learn more about recycling. We're using real data in our school to get accurate numbers. We are taking a real-life issue that we face in our school and we're trying to turn it around to make our community clean and better in terms of recycling. We want to start a trend for others to follow and inform people.
