Mrs. Lujan from Antonito CO is requesting Art Supplies through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Recycled Wearable Art

My students need fabric glues, fiber supplies, and great cutting tools to work with recycled materials correctly.

My Students

As the k-12 art teacher I am honored daily to view a population of very artistic young people who are excited to create. Although many of my students come from broken homes, foster homes, and single parent homes, they always come in ready to create something new. Some of my students have learning disabilities, but never let these disabilities stand in their way of creating an art project.

The need to create for some of my students is greater than the need to worry about time or places they need to be.

I have students come in during free time, or after and before school, just to work on a project that they have been inspired to create. I have one student in particular that comes in daily and says, "I was thinking about something all night, it's a cool idea." She gets the supplies she needs and begins to create an awesome project. She never leaves class on time, because she is going to finish the project before she moves on. She has been an inspiration to other students.

My Project

We are working on creating recycled wearable art. My 4th and 5th graders will be designing and creating a recycled accessory while my 6th to 12th graders will be designing and creating a wearable outfit.

I feel that by having the students use recycled materials to create art, they will become more aware of how important our earth is to save.

We have some recycled materials such as glass, metal, paper, bottle caps, plastics, etc. but we do not have all the tools needed to work with some of our materials. Also, we do not have options of tape, fiber threads, glues, wire types, and tools to work successfully with styrofoam.

Students will design, create, and participate in a fashion show. They will also be required to create advertising posters, a colorful brochure, and newspaper articles to announce the show.
