My Students

My students have a variety of mental, emotional and physical disabilities. Some of them come from difficult living situations such as homelessness and parents with substance abuse problems. My job is to prepare the most at risk students for a meaningful life and career in a society with little or no adult support. This includes appropriate learning experiences in Self Help, Social/Emotional, Vocational and Leisure as well as all areas of academics. Like all kids, disabled kids spend a lot of time in front of a screen. However, the parents of students with disabilities often use technology as a babysitter far longer than regular kids. This often results in increased sedentary tendencies. One of my goals for these students is to help them to find enjoyable activities that get them outside and teach skills that they will generalize into other aspects of their life.

My Project

Students at F H S have a pond within an easy walk from their classroom. For the past three years Frenchtown Pond has been the site of the Montana State Special Olympics Kayaking event. We would like to better utilize our pond by giving our students with special needs the opportunity to not only recreate but to also compete in the Special Olympics events held there. Students will be given a chance to develop recreational interests as well as self confidence and a more healthy lifestyle. Please consider funding this project for the students that struggle most to fit in.
