My students need Chibi Circuit Stickers - Red, Yellow, Blue Megapack, so they can reference color in their interactive symbol. Students need LEDs, battery and copper tape to complete their paper circuit.
The 2015-2016 school year, was the first time I used paper circuitry in my classroom in my honors English class with juniors. The name of the project was The Frankenstein Effect Project- or more lovingly named by my students as, “Um, this is English class”. The intention of the assignment was to promote a deep and meaningful 21st century understanding of “Frankenstein” in a 5 day global experiment simulation, using paper circuits as evidence of positive or negative outcomes.
My students are capable of anything, like all students, but paper circuitry let's them "feel" this capability.
It was in this 4 weeks, I really saw my students content knowledge increase, but I also saw critical thinking growth and overall mindset shifts. I began to see my students’ natural curiosity. Students would add multiple watch batteries and watch their LED become brighter. Some students compared the brightness to their cellphone flashlight and debated if pennies were conductive. A group of students realized that they could complete the circuit by holding hands- independently and female students questioned gender roles: "Why did I find out I'm good at this in English class?" Upon reflection, students insisted the next incoming class have this opportunity.
My Project
Students will create an interactive symbol for Othello. Students heavily focus on symbolism and characterization while reading Othello. In creating an interactive symbol, students will focus on "changing" the meaning of the symbol, through interaction. Students will synthesize the text with paper circuitry and PBL.
Students will build a deep 21st Century understanding of themes, symbols and characters in the "Othello Syndrome Interactive Symbol Project" by creating a meaningful product, which contributes to the betterment of their community.
Students will complete an expository essay in the form of an instruction manual for the recreation of their symbol by others, design a marketing plan for the symbol template, as fundraising for the prevention of the "Othello Syndrome"- preventing relationship abuse.
