First graders love to share stories and facts. Often, so many are sharing with me that I can't possibly remember all of their smart thinking. Having an ipad mini would allow me to record their ideas, take quick notes, and organize the data in an exciting way that I could share with my students.
Our school is located in the city of Denver, CO.
The first grade students in our "crew" all believe that we are truly "crew, not passengers". This means each student looks out for the other and knows the boat only sails on if each person does their job. Over a third of our students come from low-income families. Most come from single parent or split homes where resources are scarce. Despite any challenges they may face, the students in this crew view every day as an opportunity to become an expert. Having spent their kindergarten year together and looping up to first grade, they have become family to one another.
My Project
The challenge in our classroom lies in having 26 inspiring, enthusiastic, creative learners in one room -- and offering each one the feedback and support they need to stay motivated and engaged. I want to be able to capture all that they know and provide them with evidence for their progress and their next steps. I believe having an ipad will allow me to record their ideas in real time, create a record of their stories, organize the information I collect, and be able to share the data with my students as we celebrate growth and decide on each student's next steps.
This project is so important because young children crave attention and feedback.
They want you to know what they know and they want you to reflect back their progress in meaningful ways. What better way than to hold all that smart student thinking in one place so that when conferring with each child, I can scroll through their audio clips, notes from our meetings, previous goal setting records, etc. and celebrate how far we've gone... and where we have yet to travel!
