My students need professional lab notebooks to organize and preserve their creative and experimental process as they begin their adventure in STEM research.
As a teacher in an urban school in Washington D.C., I teach students from all walks of life. Serving a diverse population of students with representatives from each ward of the city, the students have a wealth of varying experiences and challenges that they face on a daily basis. There is no "typical" student at our school. Instead, we strive to foster an environment of distinct individuals with different backgrounds who come together to foster a cooperative community.
Our students are budding classicists, entrepreneurs, humanitarians, and scientists.
They vary greatly in their experiences outside of school, which shapes their individuality, but within our walls, they come together through shared experiences to learn from each other and grow together. They are inspired, critical thinkers who thrive when given new opportunities to grow.
My Project
For the first time in our school history, we will have a Science Research Methods course to support and encourage the design and implementation of individual research projects. As a small school, we have limited resources so we are asking for a little help supporting our efforts to prepare our students for college-level science by raising funds for real science journals to document their creative process.
The journals will be used for them to keep a record of their thoughts, trials, procedures, failures, adjustments, and successes.
It is imperative for any scientist that they keep record of the process from start to finish and thus the notebooks will be the student's pride and joy as they fill it up throughout the year with their ideas, results, and triumphs.
