Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

From the first hour of the first day of school I knew I had a special group of students. They had no problems sharing their creative ideas, unique experiences, and insightful questions with myself and their peers. I teach fifth grade science at a classical magnet school. Many of our school's students are drawn there because of their abilities in the arts and academics and my class this year is no exception.

Unfortunately, many of my students come from single parent and low income homes. As a result, they have limited experiences with science or technology outside of the classroom.

I recently came across voicethread.com and the free program Photostory and thought that they would be perfect ways for my students to interact with the world outside of our classroom. They can use the microphones and digital photos to describe and interpret the results of a science experiment and explain their understanding of scientific processes. Students will evaluate what experimental procedures and results would be most effective to document with photographs. The pictures will then be uploaded onto classroom computers. Students will then collaborate to determine how the photographs should be organized into a powerpoint, voicethread, Photostory or other presentation. They will use the recordable microphones to narrate their experiences and explain their understanding. The presentations can then be uploaded on our school's website and voicethread.com for others to view and comment on, and my students can do the same with other people's videos from around the world. In order to compete and succeed in this global society, my students need to have the skills and confidence in technology, and these tools would be another way to reach that goal.

My students deserve the best, and unfortunately I do not have the means to do it alone. They have a natural aptitude and motivation to learn science and techology and share their understanding with the world. With your help I can provide them with another way to share their unique ideas and connect with the global community.
