Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
To an artist, a blank page is a place of endless possibilities; imagine having an entire book to fill!
Our elementary school is in a mostly residential neighborhood, which lies on the edge of a vibrant urban area.
Some of our young students have never ventured much beyond its borders, while others have experienced the culture, noise, and excitement of the city firsthand. My fifth grade students are energetic and creative, and bring their wide range of life experience to the art studio each week. I have known most of them since kindergarten, and have watched as they have grown and become more independent, with individual opinions, ideas and attitudes!
My Project
Each student will have his or her own hardbound artist journal which they can use in the art studio, at home, or during field trips. These journals are durable and large enough for writing, drawing and collecting images that can inspire new ideas throughout the year. Using the wide range of high quality drawing pencils requested, they will learn about a variety of artistic techniques. By expanding their skills and providing choices, as well as a place to record their explorations, my fifth graders will be able to gain a sense of ownership over their creative process!
I believe children's artwork and ideas have value, and that quality materials can inspire great ideas!
As they grow as artists, it is important to my students that have a safe, lasting place to record their ideas and the world around them as they see it. By year's end, I hope these journals become filled with questions and answers, pencil drawings, found images, and colors that reflect the imaginations and experiences of each individual student!
