As a Speech Pathologist in a K-5 school of almost 700 children, I work with a very diverse caseload of students. Currently, the majority of my caseload consists of students with mild-to-severe articulation delays. Two of the greatest challenges that children with articulation delays face is learning to produce target sounds in conversational speech and producing target sounds outside of the therapy room. Many children perform well within the therapy environment, yet continue to present with articulation errors when interacting within the classroom, at home, or with peers. One strategy I have used in the past to address this issue is tape recording students during oral reading or conversational speech activities. The student is then asked to listen to his/her tape and to judge his/her own intelligibility. I have found that this is a very motivating activity for students. They enjoy the opportunity to create their own tape and like the challenge of making a tape with no errors. I am anxious to obtain a new tape recorder that would allow me to utilize this strategy with many of my students. I have a caseload of over 60 students, 38 of which are working on articulation goals and would benefit from this activity. The tape recorder would be used with future students as well.
