Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine an urban school with abandoned train tracks and an unpleasant refuse plant across the street. Our school is located in a high poverty neighborhood where my students are faced with several challenges, both in and out of our school. Despite the many problems they face, I am looking to keep my students motivated to master various competencies via meaningful learning experiences, authentic student-driven projects and after school programs/sports.
As a district, we are ill prepared for social emotional learning and healing that we need to offer our students.
We do not have the technology training or the Social Emotional Learning training needed to properly address the challenges our students face. I, along with the rest of the staff, are working tirelessly to create a sense of normalcy for our kiddos and it starts with our daily interactions and self-care routines.
My Project
In direct response to my students' needs, I successfully completed a two hundred hour SEL and Yoga Training Program with " Breathe for Change". I have been able to apply the skills that I have learned during teacher professional development as well as with students. I have seen great success and positive change. To continue to provide these beneficial practices to my students and peers, I am seeking to complete the next level of training.
This three hundred hour training will empower and equip me to able to teach inclusive yoga classes to my students, and lead social-emotional learning and wellness experiences at my school, district, and community organizations.
Placing a deep focus on Social Emotional Learning is my personal goal to better help my students heal and cope as we begin to transition back in person. I would like to provide my kids with access to services that are not normally accessible in our community. I hope to also inspire other educators in my school community to include this type of work in their own classrooms.
