Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are fifth grade students who are economically disadvantaged. Most come from homes with limited learning opportunities and resources. When they are introduced to the opportunity to discover and learn, they are very excited. Our class is a chance for these children to have experiences that will prepare them for middle school, high school, college, and careers.
My science classroom utilizes a blend of technology and field work that we conduct in our school garden.
The idea is to attach a significant memory to the concepts that students learn and hopefully give them an experience that students can apply to other facets of their lives.
My Project
We have experienced a great deal of success with our students through exploring the culinary arts. Our diverse array of students connects to lessons very well through the talk food because it holds so many emotional attachments to their cultures. Designing lessons that are aligned to content yet keep children engaged can be done through making recipes that are easy, fast, and fun. This will only get easier if the classroom is designed to get kids cooking and understanding the role that food plays in their learning.
This project is aimed at helping students to understand our role in the food chain or food web.
Allowing our students to visibly observe the habits of producers, consumers, and decomposers as they grow will attach significant memories while learning. We will learn about making responsible choices nutritionally through growing organic vegetables and mushrooms. These ingredients will be used to teach students how to design easy recipes using fresh produce that is easily accessed in the classroom.
