My students need sets of Univercell playground balls for recess. The equipment will provide them with the opportunity to engage and make the most of their free play.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When I first began my career as a Physical Education teacher, I believed in a sports-based program.
I loved sports and my goal was to communicate my love of sports to my students. As my career has evolved, I have come to the realization that sports are not for everyone but everyone needs to move and be physically literate. My focus has changed. What I have discovered is that when kids are fit, they are more likely to be fit to learn.
The children I work with come from homes of poverty. Approximately 73% of our 450 students receive free and reduced meals. As you drive through the neighborhood after school, children are not out playing. Due to the high poverty nature of our neighborhood, parents are afraid to let their children play.
“Recess offers nearly half of the available opportunity to promote physical activity among kids during the school year. Trying to improve children’s health without focusing on recess forfeits our best chance for reaching students with the greatest need.” - Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
Recess impacts the learning environment. It provides students with meaningful play time. It allows students experience with problem solving.
My Project
The joy and excitement of my students when they find their way to recess is something I am proud to see and support.
As their physical educator, I try to assist and provide my students with the necessary equipment to maximize their chance at being physically active.
Throughout the school year students often request more playground balls, soccer balls, and basketballs to make sure they will be able to play, socialize, and have fun during their free play time.
Playground balls, basketballs, soccer balls, and jump ropes are the most popular items requested and there never seem to be enough of them!
