Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come excited to learn in two languages, as part of our Spanish Immersion Program that was adopted ten years ago to meet the need of our cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Six years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning and it has provided a positive learning environment for each student.
I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic background.
More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
All of my kindergarteners students get the amazing and unique opportunity to start learning in English and Spanish from K to 12. Close to 25% of my students' first language is English, and 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% speak another language. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bicultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.
My Project
For most of my students, recess is their favorite part of school. By this time of the year, we are down to a couple jump ropes, a few hula hoops and two balls. Students are missing opportunities to stay physically active because of our lack of playground equipment. I often go out to play with my students at this time, but lately, I have noticed many of them not as engaged or motivated to play with others or to play at all.
These two sets of balls, will provide much needed opportunities for kindergarteners to play and interact with others during recess time in a healthy and fun way.
These balls can be used to play basketball, kickball, and other fun ball games. These games will foster encourage students to play with each other, take turns, share equipment and even teach each other games.
The benefits from stay physically active at recess will help kindergarteners improve their cognitive and academic performance in the classroom. Most importantly, having these balls at recess for students to play, will allow more students to participate in ball games, stay fit and interact with others.
