I am proud to teach at a small elementary school in a rural community near Alabama's gulf coast. Our students come from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and resources, but this really is a school where everyone comes together like family.
Ours is a Leader In Me Lighthouse School (based on Covey's 7 Habits) that focuses on developing the whole child, specifically in the skills of prioritizing, communicating, finding balance, and taking responsibility.
In nurturing individuals, we are able to strengthen the whole community. These kids are our future, and giving them every opportunity is what that we strive for every day.
My Project
Free choice reading has always been an essential element of my classes. I want every child to have the opportunity to see aspects of themselves in leaders, innovators, and people all over the world. One of my greatest joys in teaching is when a student finds that perfect book, and all of sudden, they identify as readers.
So what do you do when a pandemic is sending your students home for who knows how long?
You invite them to borrow as many books as they would like from your classroom library. And I would do it again, but I would also appreciate your help in restocking those shelves!
