This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
We were very happily settled in our new school. It was to be our second year in our beautiful new school, and we were very happy. We went home for the weekend on Friday, August 26th, and our lives were changed forever. The school took six feet of water. There was some structural damage. I was talking to a librarian at our public library about how much work I would have just to process the replacements, and as I turned to leave I remembered, "I don't even have a rubber stamp!" I have a rubber stamp now. Our library collection contained 13,000 books. It was a beautiful collection, lovingly collected and enriched over the eight years I've been with this school. Everything was either destroyed by the water directly or by the ensuing mildew which followed the water and mud. People all over the United States have been very thoughtful and generous, especially of paperbacks. In order to meet our students' and teachers' needs, we will need a wide range of books. I have had to search my mind to think of what specific topics are continually requested of the library year after year. The fifth grade team at our school always does a unit on inventors and inventions. This year when they come to our new library I don't want them to be disappointed. In this proposal I am asking for biographies of famous inventors. These books will enrich the students' curriculum and serve as a resource for our teachers. I have also included Black inventors in this request. This will serve to enrich the multicultural aspects of our library, and hopefully serve as an inspiration for our students. These books will us build a well balanced library collection! Thanks you so much for your consideration and your thoughtfulness.
