My students need a movie (A Noble Lie: Oklahoma City 1995) and 35 novels (The Third Terrorist: The Middle East Connection to the Oklahoma City Bombing) to collaborate with their history classes.
Recovering after a natural disaster is difficult. However, when that national disaster is a tornado that took your home, your loved ones, and your safety its almost impossible.
I teach in Oklahoma and on May 20th an F5 tornado ripped through our homes and schools destroying any normalcy that we once had.
It also took many of our supplies and has our budget plummeting. This is a public low income school and there is no money in our budget to replace much of what we have lost. I hope this is where you can help us.
My Project
I have collaborated with the history teachers to find a way that we can make things a little easier on our students. One way is that we will cover the same event. This will allow the students to study several different aspects of the same thing. I will use the movie and the book on the Oklahoma City Bombing to allow students to complete their research projects in my English class as well as their history class.
As the students are studying the history of the event, we will be focused on elements of the writing including personal accounts of the event. Students will be able to identify with many of these accounts due to the tragedy that they have recently endured. Students will be learning elements that they are accustomed to but in a new way that makes them relevant. This will give them back some normalcy and will ease the burden by combining work with their history classes.
We want our students to know that we will never forget!
There are certain events in our lives that are forever imprinted in the scars on our hearts - The Oklahoma City Bombing, The Twin Towers, and the F5 tornado that destroyed so much but never killed our hope. Thank you in advance for all that you are doing for us. We love you!
