Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students and I were significantly devastated by the wrath of Hurricane Sandy. Our school was flooded and we lost our classroom along with all of our books and supplies. Although, we have nothing we continue to strive for success and hope to rebuild one day.

I have eager, energetic kindergarten students ages 4 and 5 years old.

They are filled with the love of reading and despite all that they have experienced from this storm they continue to come to school with a positive outlook. They are excited by what the day has in store for them. My students have lost their homes, toys, clothing and many of their favorite items that can never be replaced. For many of them school is now a place for them to come for warmth and comfort while their parents try to rebuild. They continue to inspire me with their positive outlook and their continued interest in learning.

My Project

Reading is such a huge part of our day and to have appropriate reading materials and leveled reading books for the children is incredibly important. I believe in allowing my students to grow at their own level and pace. A leveled library would support their reading. It's amazing to see the students faces when they discover that they've learned to read a new book. It's awesome to see the students read picture books for enjoyment and discover new words and new concepts of print. Some of the picture books being requested are The Snowy Day, The Napping House, The Rainbow Fish, and Mouse Paint. I also need 3 bean bags and leveled reading books.

This project is important to me because I want to continue to support my students reading and properly prepare them for first grade.

I want them to continue to provide just right books for them to read in class as well as at home to their families. I want to continue to inspire my students love of reading. The best gift I can give them is the opportunity to read.
