Reaping What We Sow Learning as We Grow Part 2

My students need bird feeders, a mobile metal wall, a composter, an arbor, and other gardening tools so they can make our garden beautiful again.

My Students

Some of my students come from difficult family lives, but they don't let that stop them. We have built a community in our classroom that allows each student to be comfortable with who they are. Even though we are a diverse school, everyone feels included.

About 90% of the students are receiving free or reduced-price lunch.

Most students are living with a single parent or both parents work full time, although many parents are eager to help in any way they can.

My Project

Our school has an awesome outdoor space that has a lot of potentials. This could be a place where students would have hands-on experience with planting fruits and vegetables that they can take home to share with their families. They could learn about the weather with barometers, thermometers, and rain gauges. Since there is plenty of space, we could have a butterfly garden to teach students about the life cycle. There could also be a stream table to teach older students about weathering, erosion, and decomposition. The picnic tables could be used to conduct class outside or to eat lunch in this beautiful space as a reward.

The problem with this space is that it has been neglected and is now overgrown with weeds.

This space needs a lot of love to make it beautiful again. These materials will allow us to do just that. However, it will not be the adults that make this happen. The students in all grade levels will work on this garden to make it a functioning garden. The garden tool accessory kit, kneeling pads, aprons, hand tools, and shovels will be used by students to plant fruits and vegetables. The arbor will provide a nice entrance to the students' garden. The composter will teach students how to reduce waste. The bird feeders will teach students how to care for wild animals. The mobile metal wall will be a place students can plant individual plants and watch them grow. The hose hanger will house the water hose so it is available for students to water their plants.

With these materials, all our students will be able to help make this dream come true as they work together.
