My students need quality read alouds to aide in their vocabulary development as well as other comprehension skills. Starting our time with a read aloud has been a very effective and relaxing way to start learning.
My students come from mostly working class and low income families. Our school is an ethnically diverse school and is located on the south side of Chicago. Many of our students speak both English and Spanish.
My students are all very hard working, creative and insightful.
All of them receive reading and math instruction in a special education classroom. Some of them receive speech and social work services as well.
I am very lucky to work with such a wonderful group! They love to learn, laugh and explore! They continue to amaze me everyday!
We start reading a chapter from our read aloud each day. Students used these dynamic books to help with a variety of reading skills including vocabulary development, comprehension skills and discussion time.
We discuss and apply new and interesting vocabulary.
We summarize verbally and with written communication to show comprehension.
Our favorite is our discussions about the problems and solutions the characters face. Lastly, we compare the texts to each other and we find many text to self- connections to help us better understand one another . These discussions have helped us to learn and love each other even more!
