As an ELA/Reading teacher, I need to purchase a new class set of novels. My set is not enough since my total number of students has increased since Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita (and my set is ten years old). The novel, ?The Lottery Rose,? by Irene Hunt is a wonderful realistic fiction novel. Primarily the novel is about a child abuse case of a young boy. Through this book, students learn about many life lessons. My students will read and analyze the characters. Students will work in Literary Circles to discuss the characters and relate the characters to life experiences. After doing research about child abuse in the world, Louisiana, and our parish of Livingston, students will become aware of how prevalent this problem is today. Some of our students have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. The news media has revealed how child abuse increased shortly after Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. Through this novel and activities, students learn about positive ways to deal with circumstances life may present. Students learn how to cope if circumstances relate to them, as well as how to help others going through difficult circumstances. It teaches a theme of love and compassion. In life, this makes a difference. Thank you for any consideration you may give to my students and their needs.
