Mrs. Smith from Idaho Falls ID is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students realistic fiction that will relate to them and will allow them to make a connection to literature.
I am a teacher at a Title I (low income) school. My students face challenges both at school and at home. It is my goal each day to give them learning experiences that bring a personal connection to what they learn. This connection helps them to see that their challenging circumstances can be overcome with hard work. I strive to make our classroom a safe place for them where they can flourish and find success.
My 5th-grade students are a diverse group of hard-working students that come from a wide range of backgrounds, learning levels, and abilities.
They are English language learners, below grade level learners, above grade level learners, and more. It is my responsibility to provide each student with a learning experience that reaches them at their level, their interest, and their learning style. Thankfully, my students are wonderful role models and work together despite these differences. In fact, they work together, they support one another and learn from each other.
Realistic fiction is a teacher's best friend. This genre reaches all levels of students in both their reading abilities and their reading interests. For reluctant readers, it gives them literature that they can relate to, thus drawing them in. It is a gateway genre. For students that love reading already it enhances and grows their reading comprehension and more.
The novel "Earthquake Terror" is a novel that students love because of the action, the characters, and never-ending twists and turns.
They cheer, oooooh, awe, and gasp throughout the story. I would like to be able to put a book in each student's hands. This would allow them to collaborate more, discuss more, and write more. All of these activities would grow them as both readers and writers.
The level engagement while reading this novel is thrilling to see as a teacher. I can only imagine how much more they would be engaged if they had their own novel to follow along with me, read with a partner or read alone.
