Real World Science For First Graders

Help me give my students a hands on ability to experience science. The students will get the chance to propagate, plant, and grow their own plants at their work spaces.

My Students

My classroom is full of wonderful young learners. It is a diverse community, and our classroom has 15 English Language Learners. We have a wide range of abilities and personalities. All of the students work so beautifully together and truly enjoy being at school. As a class, we are fully inclusive and have a few students with IEPs and 504 plans. The students are always so appreciative of any supplies that enter the classroom and take good care of them.

We are a part of the largest elementary school in our district, serving over 600 students each year.

Our project will be a part of a common learning space that will be used by the grade level throughout the year. We are hoping to create an area for hands-on learning and exploration.

My Project

We have an entire science unit devoted to plants and animals. It is a year long unit that could greatly benefit from hands on experiences. Student will get to learn if plants can grow from bulbs, plant clippings, scraps of vegetables, seeds, and more.

The goal is for students to create and maintain a garden of their own, using various techniques throughout the year.

Students will be given the tools to create new plants, and learn from doing and observing. Students will learn how to grow food, build habitats, and see how the water cycle functions in a closed environment.
