Every day most Americans read some type of nonfiction material. It might be a newspaper, a magazine, a manual or a how-to book. This is the type of lifelong reading that successful people do. I teach 20 fifth-graders in a school that is in a community of poverty. Nearly 90% of the students I teach receive free or reduced lunch each day. If there is not enough money in the homes for food, that means that there is definitely not enough money to purchase reading materials. My district has been able to provide very nice fiction libraries for the classrooms so that the students have plenty of novels to read. However, there is no money to purchase real-world non-fiction materials. Most of these students never get a chance to read a daily newspaper, much less a magazine. They are missing out on the kind of reading that real people do in the real world every day. What I am seeking through this donation is the chance to expose my fifth-grade students to this type of reading while at the same time giving them ownership of some reading materials. I would like my students to have a news magazine once a week, a science/social studies magazine once a month, and a current events magazine once a week. I plan to use these magazines as part of my language arts curriculum on a weekly basis. The magazines will also be available to students to read during independent reading time which occurs every day. The high interest topics in these magazines will encourage even reluctant readers to read. I believe that if my students can read like real people instead of just for school, they will begin to understand the importance of a lifelong love of reading.
