My students need Scholasitc DynaMath magazines as a way to bring math to life through real world problem solving and reading.
Every year I walk into a classroom of unique children all faced with the same challenge. My students come from all over the world with vast amounts of life experience, but lack the ability to read and apply math. My goal is to get them proficient in math using real-world applications in literacy.
I am privileged to teach math to a fantastic group of third graders from all over the world who speak many different languages.
Almost all of my students are low-income, English language learners. Each day I see about 90 different students in classes of about 30. Our school serves as a refugee magnet school for our district attracting approximately 1,100 students who speak 30+ languages and are from over 50 different countries. We are a Title I school that provides more than an environment of learning, but a community for the students and their families to learn how to be successful in the United States.
This school year my students will be tested on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Literacy and Math. In 3rd grade, math is more than just 3 x 9. It revolves around a child's ability to read and comprehend word problems in order to demonstrate their mastery of math by doing multiple math performance tasks and then express their answers through writing. The DynaMath magazines will enable me to provide an interesting and fun way to prepare my students with these skills, not only in math but in literacy too! These magazines will provide my students an opportunity to step outside of a typical math classroom to experience real-life problem solving skills aligned to the math and literacy CCSS.
My students come from a variety of different backgrounds, but have not yet developed the necessary English skills to master the Common Core State Standards yet.
The DynaMath magazines will change my students lives by providing unique opportunities for them to build background knowledge about the world we live in and become proficient in math and literacy at the same time!Read More
