This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I call them my "big babies". They think they are all grown up, but more than ever still need guidance and love and support. The diversity of my students, academically and socially makes for rich conversations about various topics. They are at the age when they are ready for a good challenge.
What's not to love about 8th graders!
They are curious, opinionated yet willing to listen to each other. My students challenge me everyday to learn and grown along with them.
My Project
So many times I get this question from my students, "When will I ever use this in real life?" With this magazine, they will discover the "when" on their own. Scholastic describes the magazine this way: Scholastic MATH magazine connects essential math skills to current events and shows how math is found everywhere.
I have found that when students make relevant connections to their learning, they are more engaged and invested and that is what these magazines will offer with the real world math articles and problems.
I am excited for my students to start experiencing math in this creative way.
