My students have multiple and severe disabilities from combinations of Autism, Downs Syndrome, Traumatic Brain Injury, Intellectual disabilities, Cerebral Palsy, Global Developmental delay, and more.
My students crave connections with the world around them and deserve every opportunity to learn in meaningful ways that will build real-world accessibility.
Despite different diagnosises, they all share the isolation that comes with difficulties in communication, social interactions, understanding learning concepts, and being able to demonstrate their understanding.
Providing meaningful, hands-on, multi-sensory learning in a low socio-economic area is our biggest challenge.
My Project
Eliminating the isolation my students experience in trying to connect to a real-world while in a self-contained classroom is challenging. Providing learning that is meaningful for both academics and participation in the real world is vitally important. Items in this project are specially chosen to provide a more direct opportunity to fill that need.
Multi-sensory, hands-on learning materials that provide direct, real-world connections will provide opportunities for my students to be able to learn and participate more fully in their school and neighborhood communities.
Often, without a reference of understanding of foundational topics, my students can feel socially isolated within their own inclusive school environment merely by the fact they have less access to the world around them. Tools that extend their learning from curriculum to real-world are of vital importance.
