I teach special education, behavior disordered students in an alternative education school. My students are in grades 6-10 and I teach all academic subjects in a self-contained classroom. All of my students are on free and reduced lunch and have learning and behavior disorders. There are approximately 65 students in our school.
Traditional school settings have failed them and our school is the last stop before they either learn the skills needed to return to a traditional school or possibly drop out.
They need to be inspired to learn and need experiences that help them to improve their behavioral skills. Our building goals are to help every student become future-ready and to be able to become productive law-abiding citizens that contribute to society.
My Project
As teachers in a low-income school with very limited resources, being able to take our students on a field trip or bring guest speakers is one of the best tools we can use to provide every student with real-world experiences. When students leave the classroom or someone new comes to share experiences, they form connections between what is happening at school and in the ‘real-world’. They begin to see that what they learn within the walls of the classroom can help them solve the problems they see in the world around them and can have a direct impact on who they become as people.
Our students all have behavior disabilities and many also have learning disabilities.
This makes it very difficult to take them into the community without a lot of support as well as funding. They deserve the same opportunities as non-disabled kids. They are amazing, wonderful kids who enjoy learning and deserve all the opportunities we can provide them.
