Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are some of the most interesting students around. They may be here for a number of reasons from needing to work, discipline issues, or maybe they need something other than the traditional high school setting. While some people might ignore these students we encourage them to try to become the best students they can. These students are at risk, most are low income, and some are second language learners. Some are below grade level as their behavior has impeded their academic progress.
We would like to give them the opportunity to see characters that they can relate to.
They have the idea that they are not readers or that reading is not cool. They don't see how it is important to their lives. We would like the chance to have these students see how books can be a window into their lives.
My Project
We are wanting to create a book club that allows students to read current books that have issues that our students may deal with. Our community has recently lost a young man in a police shooting that became a media event. Some of our students knew this person or others that have been in a similar situation. We would like to use these books as an opportunity to help students learn how to handle situations that they can relate to. With this book study, we would invite local police officers to read as well and invite them to talk to our students and share their point of view.
Our hope is that after reading these books they will have a better understanding of others, themselves, and their community.
We want students to see that books can be a way to help them in their daily lives as these books will have relevance to them. Additionally, the best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and our goal is that once they read one of these books they will want to read more books and share what they have learned through reading.
