REAL Social Studies!

My students need 20 subscriptions to both Weekly Reader News and Time for Kids as well as two 2008 almanacs.

What's that sound? It's the sound of my students snoring as they begin to open their social studies textbooks. The thud is their heads hitting the desks because the books have put them into a temporary coma. I teach 3rd grade. We are a Title I school. Our standardized test scores are low, despite ALL of the teachers' hard work, and we have a high population of students on free/reduced lunch.

The textbooks we currently use for social studies have been written far above the reading levels of many of my students. They can't read it, and they really don't care about the content. My students need social studies to be relevant to them. I think Time for Kids and Weekly Reader will bring home concepts they face, or will face very soon. If students care about a topic, they will "own" it, and they will have a deeper understanding of it. That's what I'm looking for.

I will use the Time for Kids and Weekly Reader subscriptions and the almanac during our 40 minute social studies period and writing period, as well. These magazines will drive home concepts that are important to my kids. We will use these resources at least 3 times every week. The concepts introduced will let us springboard to other topics to research and develop further. I have 20 students, 13 regular education, and 7 special education. We'll work in partners often, so everyone get the most out of the readings and the projects that will follow.

Your gift will make it possible for my students to see the relevance of social studies and how it affects their lives. Right now, they see social studies as a boring chore, almost a punishment. The information we'll pull of out of the resources I've requested will enable my kids to see how what's happening in the world affects them. These resources will allow me to tie together all the subject areas, and that's when a deeper understanding will be gained. Please help them to see and understand what is going on around them.
