I teach high school to a diverse group of students age 13-18. I am privileged to work with students who challenge me to be the best educator I can and whose successes' feel personal. As a teacher I think one of the most important things I can do is make the children know that I care!
Many of my students come from low-income, single parent households.
I make sure they know I am there for them to help them succeed! I try to provide classroom experiences that help them grow in both education and life.
In biology we learn all about cancer. This is a topic that can be hard for many students to learn about because it has personal connections. In order to give my students a full experience I like to read a book about the topic.
The value of reading about "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," and her contributions to our knowledge of cancer cells is imperative.
I have a half class set of a "Sick Boy" for my grade level readers, but would love a class set of "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," for my advanced class. This book will help give my AP students a well rounded education on a very important topic.
