My students are at a middle/high alternative school, and they come to us for a variety of reasons. These students are transient in that they may be with us a week, month, or a few the rest of the year.
My students need special help with their science skills due to the fact of high absentees.
Some of these reasons are behavioral, lack of academic success, mental, and social skills.
The teachers at the school work hard to create a school environment that has just as much rigor and content as a traditional middle/high school, but to present the material in different and individualized ways for our students. Our students seem to like being with us in that they get more one on one instruction than in their base schools.
We are a small school in a rural district, and therefore we struggle to get as much recognition and funding for classroom environments and projects as traditional schools.
My Project
This year, the class will start with How Scientists Do kit. This will allow them to work on setting up science labs and reporting on the experiments.
Due to drugs being a problem in schools, the Study of Drugs in Small Town will give students the experience of what police and the forensic labs go through in our rural area on a routine basis to help keep us safe.
The Unknown Substances will help students figure out how to found out unknown substances when their is some type of disasters in the area such as floods and hurricanes.
