This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Pre-K is the first experience of school for the majority of my students. Most come from low-income neighborhoods without a lot of exposure to the outside world. My classroom is a happy and safe place for the students to experience what is out in the world. My district does not have money to supply items that enrich my students’ learning throughout the year.
Unfortunately, the funding source for my Pre-K class only provides basics for the students, and there was not any money left for supplies.
My students are asked to bring in very few supplies at the beginning of the year, but by halfway through the year those have been depleted. I buy what I can and ask for donations, but sometimes we can't complete projects and activities for the lack of materials.
My Project
My students do not have many books at home. I try to get donations so I can share books with them and their families can read to them. This year I was fortunate to have a teacher share her Scholastic magazine with my students. The children would get so excited especially when topics would be covered that we have talked about in class. We were lucky enough to have Monarch butterflies lay eggs on our Milkweed. We had about 8 caterpillars hatch and watched Metamorphosis happen repeatedly. The children were so excited to be able to read about it and be able to take the magazine home.
